Bunnies & Brand: A Guide to Avoiding Rabbit-Fur in Lolita Fashion

Lolitas love usagis, and that's a fact. They're soft, cute, gentle, and one of the most popular print and design themes. But unfortunately, in the past some lolita brands have even used REAL bunnies to create the clothes we love.
Thankfully, most lolita brands DON'T use real-fur these days, and the ones that once did seem to have long ceased to. This is understandable, because as well as controversial, real fur is far more expensive to work with than faux fur, so it's a good decision to make from an economic standpoint as well as an ethical one.

The purpose of this post is not to shame our favourite brands for using rabbit-fur in their early histories or discourage you from buying from them, but to provide you with a list of lolita items that you might want to avoid if you happen to come across them on a second-hand sales site. Of course, buying fur second-hand does not *directly* support the fur industry financially, but I think it is important to be aware of what it is exactly that you are wearing, where it came from, and the pain and suffering that went into its creation.

Victorian Maiden
Between 2004 and 2006, Victorian Maiden released a lot of rabbit-fur products alongside many faux-fur products. Although VM doesn't seem to be using fur nowadays, historically they were probably the worst offenders in lolidom when it came to bunny welfare. Here is a list of some of their past rabbit-fur products:

'Rabbit Fur Cuffs'

'Rabbit Fur Cape'

Unfortunatley, even my beloved AatP released a few rabbit-fur items back in 2006 as well.

Other Animal Victims

Rabbit isn't the only hide that's been used in lolita fashion before. For example, this 2010 Emily & Shirley Temple Cute coat had a collar made from fox-fur.

'Fur Collared Down Coat'
Year: 2010
Colours: Brown, Pink
And this Victorian Maiden cape is made from Tianjin lamb fur, meaning that the baby lamb was killed (probably the second it was born) and skinned instead of shorn.

'Lamb Fur Cape'
Year: 2007
Colours: Black, White

Here is a useful WikiHow article on how to tell real fur from faux fur, just in case you think you might already own something with fur.
